📝 Academic Writing Styles
TOEFL reading passages use different techniques commonly found in academic texts:
🔹 Exposition
Explains or informs about a topic, providing facts or descriptions.
Example: “The text explains how photosynthesis occurs in plants.”
🔹 Narration
Tells a story or describes a sequence of events.
Example: “The passage narrates the life of a famous inventor.”
🔹 Argumentation
Presents a claim or thesis supported by evidence to persuade the reader.
Example: “The author argues that renewable energy is essential for sustainable development.”
🔹 Analysis
Breaks down a topic into its parts to understand it better.
Example: “The text analyzes the impact of industrialization on urban development.”
📌 Why This Matters
By identifying the structure and purpose of a passage (Exposition, Narration, Argumentation, or Analysis), you can better predict what types of questions will be asked and improve your ability to locate the correct answers quickly.
