Lesson Overview
NGN case studies are designed to assess clinical judgment, which is the heart of safe and effective nursing care.
Each case study presents an unfolding client scenario across multiple questions. The student must use the information provided to recognize cues, analyze data, prioritize problems, select interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
NurseAdemy Key Point: Case studies are not testing memorization alone. They are testing how you think like a nurse as the client situation changes.
How NGN Case Studies Unfold
In an NGN case study, sometimes you receive a lot of client information at the beginning. Other times, new details appear as the case unfolds, just like real nursing practice.
You must read each update carefully and answer each question based on the information available at that moment.
Important: On exam day, you cannot go back to previous questions. Treat each question as a new clinical decision.
Common Case Study Tabs:
Nurse’s Notes
History & Physical
Vital Signs
Lab Results
Diagnostics
Medication Administration Record
Provider Orders
The 6 Steps of Clinical Judgment
NGN case studies are built around the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. Each question usually aligns with one of the six steps below.
1
Recognize Cues
Identify relevant and important information from the client’s history, assessment, vital signs, labs, or notes.
Ask: What data matters?
2
Analyze Cues
Organize and connect the cues to understand what is happening with the client.
Ask: What does this data mean?
3
Prioritize Hypotheses
Determine which problem is most likely, most urgent, or most dangerous.
Ask: What is the priority problem?
4
Generate Solutions
Identify expected outcomes and possible nursing interventions.
Ask: What can the nurse do?
5
Take Action
Choose and implement the safest intervention that addresses the highest priority.
Ask: What should the nurse do now?
6
Evaluate Outcomes
Compare the client’s response with the expected outcome to determine if the condition improved or worsened.
Ask: Did the client improve?
How to Think Through a Case Study
- Start with the clinical scenario. Identify where the client is and why they are seeking care.
- Review the tabs carefully. Check notes, history, vitals, labs, diagnostics, and orders.
- Follow the updates. New information may change the priority.
- Do not jump to conclusions. Select only answers supported by the scenario.
- Use priority language. Watch for words like immediate, first, priority, most concerning, or requires follow-up.
- Think safety first. Choose the response that protects the client from harm.
NurseAdemy Tip: Before looking at the answer choices, ask yourself: “Which step of clinical judgment is this question testing?”
Common NGN Item Types Inside Case Studies
Case studies may include different item types. The format can change from one question to the next.
- Multiple Response / SATA
- Matrix Multiple Choice
- Matrix Multiple Response
- Highlight Text
- Highlight Table
- Drop-Down Cloze
- Drag-and-Drop Cloze
- Extended Drag-and-Drop
- Bow Tie
The case study gives you the clinical story. The item type tells you how to answer.
NurseAdemy Strategy for NGN Case Studies
- Read the question first so you know what you are looking for.
- Go back to the exhibits and identify only the relevant data.
- Look for trends, not isolated findings.
- Use ABCs, safety, and priority frameworks when needed.
- Do not select extra answers unless you can clinically justify them.
- After each question, reset your thinking and focus on the current client update.
NurseAdemy Final Takeaway: Case studies test your ability to think in real time. The safest answer is the one supported by the client data, priority, and clinical judgment.
