Repeat Sentence

You’ll listen to a sentence and you need to repeat it exactly as you heard it. In this section test takers complete between 10-12  items in total.

The Repeat Sentence task in the PTE Speaking section aims to assess your ability to listen and accurately reproduce sentences in English. It tests your listening and speaking skills, your short-term memory, and your ability to understand and reproduce English sentences in terms of pronunciation, intonation, and the pace of speech.

Here’s how it works:

• You’ll hear a short sentence in English. This sentence could be about anything, and it can vary in length.
• After listening to the sentence, you have to repeat it exactly as you heard it. There won’t be a written version of the sentence, so you’ll need to rely on your memory.
• You won’t have a lot of time to think after hearing the sentence. As soon as the sentence finishes, a short beep will sound, and you should begin speaking immediately.

Scoring is based on three factors:

• Content: Did you repeat the sentence without omitting any words?
• Oral Fluency: Was your rhythm, phrasing, and stress smooth and natural?
• Pronunciation: Was your speech easily understandable to most regular speakers of the language?

Here are some strategies that might help you perform better in this task:

• Focus: Focus on the sentence when it is being played. It’s very important to concentrate because you will only hear the sentence once.
• Remember Key Words: If the sentence is too long to remember in its entirety, focus on remembering key words and the overall meaning. This can help you recreate the sentence.
• Practice: Improve your short-term memory and listening skills by practicing this task type regularly. You can do this by listening to English podcasts or radio programs and trying to repeat what you hear.

After hearing the sentence, and the short beep sound, you should immediately repeat the sentence as exactly as you can.

Remember, it’s important to try and imitate the intonation and stress of the speaker, as well as the words themselves. The more closely your repetition matches the original sentence, the higher your score will be.

Repeat Sentence

After watching the video on the “Repeat Sentence“ section of the PTE, the student will learn: 

1. Concentration: The most crucial aspect of this task is your ability to focus and listen carefully to the sentence being read. Each sentence is only played once, so maintaining concentration is essential.
2. Memory: It’s important to remember the sentence in order to repeat it. Practice exercises that enhance your short-term memory can be beneficial.
