review — level 5 direct object patterns
At this level, direct objects can be more than one word. If you only pick a single noun inside a larger phrase,
you will miss the correct answer.
what a direct object can look like
- noun phrase: the new policy
- compound noun phrase: blood tests and an ultrasound
- gerund phrase: taking the medication
- clause object: that the exam would change next year
- infinitive pattern: expects the students to submit… (object = the students)
high-frequency traps
- indirect object: gave the students instructions (students ≠ direct object)
- object complement: made the patient comfortable (comfortable ≠ direct object)
- inside-the-clause trap: picking “the exam” instead of the full clause
Quick check: after the verb, your answer should complete this sentence: “they verb ___.”
If it sounds incomplete, you probably picked only part of the object.
