Review — identifying the object
The object receives the action of the verb.
It answers: what? or whom?
Step-by-step
- 1) underline the verb
- 2) ask: what does the subject act on?
Common traps
- prepositional phrases (to the students, in the clinic, after lunch)
- adverbs (quickly, carefully)
- the subject itself
If the word is inside a prepositional phrase (to / in / at / after / before), it is usually NOT the direct object.
